Google Search Basics- A Introduction to the World's Search technology

Google's Mission- "To organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful."

Define: "move slowly; in the case of people or animals with the body near the ground; "The crocodile was crawling along the riverbed"

It is the process by which Googlebot (Google's crawling Robot/spider that crawls the web and index the sites) finds the new sites that are not added to the Google database and the ones that are outdated and and are no longer present on the web.

There are several computers (servers) that perform this huge task of scanning billions of sites with trillions of pages. There is no set defined known method or the rule of crawling. This is something that was kept confidential by the Google to avoid the misuse of search algorithms by the SEO experts & to maintain its competitive advantage over other search engines. This algorithm decides which sites need to scan and how many pages are required to be fetched from that site.

Google collects a long list of links whenever it scans the web and stores them for future crawling. There is a webmaster tool where webmasters can also submit their sitemaps that provides a readymade listing of all your pages and can be easily indexed.

The most unique point of Google search is that Google never accepts payments from any site owner to index that into its search database. Thus the results that came out are not biased.

Define- "the act of classifying and providing an index in order to make items easier to retrieve."

Google indexes the pages fetched from the crawls as per the keywords found in them. Moreover also review the meta-tags and keywords mentioned in the code. There are several content types that Google cannot process like Videos content, Flash, rich media files. To have a good index always design your site as content rich with text. One can easily notice that the whole Google platform do not use any flashy design or very heavy graphics. All the pages hosted on Goggle always contains good amount of Text.

Serving results

The results were served on the page whenever a user enters a search string in the search engine. The search engine queries the database with that keyword and fetches the sites indexed for that keyword and list them on the page in a specific ranking order based on the confidential algorithm of Google. As per Google there are more than 200 factors involved in the ranking method. Thier is tool - PageRank. Google assigns a pagerank to every site online. PageRank defines the the importance of that webpage result based on the relevance of that site and importance given to this site by other sites. That means if the web result page link has some inbound links from some good sites then it adds value to your pagerank and boosts your rank in the Google Search Results.

There are methods by which Google's robot distinguish between spam links and genuine links. The best types of links are those that are given based on the quality of your content.

However the primary importance for any site is to get the site indexed properly. For this webmasters should generate the sitemaps that should contain all the links of your site. In other words it should be the index of your site.

There are many guidelines that one can follow to boost its rank, we will discuss this guidelines in our forthcoming issues.
